Find words that match a pattern

If you are becoming frustrated at your daily crossword puzzle or if you need help in any other similar word game, this may be the tool you are looking for.

Words Matching the Pattern is a very useful searching engine for when you already know some of the letters within a word and their specific position. For example, you are completing your crossword puzzle and you have a 7-letter word of which you already know the letters on positions 2, 3, and 5. If you cannot remember any term with that pattern nor decipher the crossword clue, you can easily type in the pattern in the search bar above and retrieve a list with all the English words that agree with your criteria. 

How to use Words Matching the Pattern

On the top of the page, you will find a field entitled “Words matching”. Use this field to type in the incomplete word you are looking to find. Replace the unknown letters with “?”. Once you are done, just press enter on your keyboard or click on the “Search Words” button next to the search bar.

For example, let us say that you are searching for a 5-letter word that starts with C and L and ends with a D. In this case, you would need to type in CL??D. Our Words Matching the Pattern tool would then retrieve all the words matching your criteria. 

You can search for words with up to 15 letters. There are no restrictions as to the number of known and unknown variables on your query. You can use this tool to search for all the 3-letter words available in English by simply searching for three question marks, for instance. Or you can search for all the 9-letter words with a T in the fourth position. Just have fun exploring the vocabulary richness of the English language.
